Book Review: 'Deer Cameras; The Science of Scouting'

by Dave Hurteau

Only the rarest technical how-to book is a joy to read. As an honest critic, I’m bound to tell you that Deer Cameras; The Science of Scouting, published by the Quality Deer Management Association ($25, 242 pages, qdma.com), is not among the very, very few. No surprise. So buy it instead for the information that is crammed into this handy, authoritative guide. If you have the slightest interest in using trail cams to scout deer, Part I will help you pick the right model and get the most out of it.

Part II is dedicated to trail-cam surveys, a revolutionary herd-monitoring method that makes data once the domain of professionals now readily available to the amateur deer manager. “If you know how to operate a trail camera and a calculator,” writes pro manager Dave Edwards in Chapter 5, “you can conduct a trail-cam survey” and determine your herd’s population, density, buck-to-doe ratio, age structure, fawn-to-doe ratio, as well as you property’s carrying capacity, maximum sustainable yield, harvest goals, and on and on. Finally, if you want your cams to help you target mature bucks specifically, Part III will prove a valuable guide.

Winter Trout Fishing 2/19/2011

On Saturday 2/19/2011, we had a little time to get away to a spring creek outside of the Sunriver area while visiting Bend, Oregon. Right when we arrived, the hatch was starting up with good numbers of black midges. The fish were up and on them with a full on surface feeding session. We caught a nice amount of fish on dry flies, as the surface frenzy commenced for a couple of hours. The roads were nasty on the drive over from Bend, but the intermittent snow showers kept the hatch going, and the catching was relatively easy for a spring creek.

Chrome Strikes for Adam and Damon

Last week on Thursday the 17th, two of our "fishaholic" awesome customers Adam and Damon went out on a guided trip with Jad, and they both struck CHROME. They both had been talking about this trip, and how they would have both love to lock into a chromer. Well, their wishes came true! The river offered them both a landed chrome prize, and they also had another couple on; so it was a great day out on the water.

The action has been pretty good on the area rivers, with some days of good catch and hookup numbers; while other days you are wishing for a tug. That is steelheading though...Luckily, when you do rope into a fish; it'll be a glorious chrome bright fish with a thumb sized adipose fin on it. That or you may be lucky, and you may get tight to an early summer run fish. They are also started to trickle in to the systems that have the early runs.

Time is running out for the winter steelhead fishing. If you are interested in booking a trip for winter steelhead, or any of our other types of fly fishing, call us at (503)-639-6400 or email us at travel@kman.com.
