Anybody need some free fishing gear?

Been a crazy week, lots of travel and other stuff going on, been neglecting the blog.  Congrats to Arizona Pros Dean Rojas & Cliff Pirch for both notching tour level wins earlier today.

Not too long ago, I got a nice shipment of new Akinetix gear in, they make some very affordable and functional polarized fishing sunglasses, including youth & woman's models, definitely worth checking out.  They even have floating shades for those of us that our clumsy.

They also have some nice moisture wicking gear and other gear.  So to celebrate spring, I am running a little contest, on my Facebook Page, so just follow this link to enter.  You have until Sunday April 24th to get entered.  So head over and enter to win some free gear and check out the Akinetix website as well.

The Akinetix Shield sunglasses pictured are what i have been wearing on the water!

The Elite Eight of Whitetail Brush Rifles

by Dave Hurteau

On the radio this morning and it’s all UConn vs. Butler. But who can be bothered with that when the all-time deer-killing king is about to go head-to-head with perhaps the best all-around whitetail rifle ever made, in the 94 vs. 99 matchup. And if it’s a shootout you’re after, we’ve got the North Woods’ ubiquitous pump vs. its autoloading brother.

With Division II play wrapped up, including an not-very-surprising upset pulled off by the popular Woodsmaster, we arrive the our Elite Eight. So, as usual, check out the bracket (you can click here to print out a larger copy if you want to fill it out). Then vote for your preferred brush rifle in each matchup below. And in a few days, we will have our Final Four.

The Final Four of Whitetail Brush Rifles

by Dave Hurteau

Well things are getting interesting now, aren’t they? Not to mention a little upsetting as one of the stars in my cabinet, the venerable 99, goes down in flames. (Oh well, I’ve got two more still in the running.) Meanwhile, who’d have guessed that a bolt—even one so popular as the Model Seven—would get this deep into the tourney? But it has, and we now have our final four matchups.

First is the aforementioned Seven vs. the most popular deer rifle ever made. I think we can at least pencil that one in. But second is a far more interesting matchup: the 336 vs. the 7600. A few years back, I traded a 760 in .35 Rem. for a 336 in .35 Rem.—and am still not sure who got the better gun in the deal. I know this: At the Adirondack camps I where I’ve hunted, there are more of the two-seed 7600 than the one-seed 336.

A bloody great hole in my foot!

So just after I had sent my waders for a full hole repair job to Diver Dave I then spent a few nervous trips thinking I had a leak – turned out it was just the cold and not creeping water in my nether regions.

Anyway, last time I was out I noticed a [...]

Airflo Rangefinder Distance - Product Review

Recently, I lined up my single handed steelhead rod with a Airflo Rangefinder Distance ridge fly line, and the line gets a major thumbs up. I went fishing at a location for steelhead that is smaller, but wide enough to swing some flies here and there, but it is mainly a Thingamabobber game. A great place to test out a floating line; especially since you can throw overhead casts, roll casts, nymphing presentations, and swinging with some weighted flies. I was wondering how this line would preform with its "turnover factor" with indicators and the weighted flies.

It turns out that the line is super smooth with its casting, yet it throws aggressively and it throws with authority. I found it turned over flies and the Thingamabobber really well, and the mending was very easy with the line since it has a really long head (65'). When swinging, it turned over weighted flies very well, and it did so while roll casting or overhead casting. Mending was a piece of cake with the long head, and the running line handled well. The 18 foot rear taper makes turning those heavy flies and wind resistant nymphing rigs over with ease. The front taper is long enough for a super soft laydown; yet it is short enough to flip some heavy weight over also.

This is a wonderful all around floating fly line that would be an excellent choice for a the Northwest steelheader, a lake angler that like using floating lines for many of their applications, or someone who like to throw lots of line for their given quarry.
